All Safetell engineers are BS EN16005 trained. This is the European Standard code of practice for safety in the use of powered pedestrian doors (automatic doors). Below we explain this code of practice:

All powered pedestrian doors installed since April 2013 should comply with the BS EN16005. BS EN16005 is a harmonised/designated standard. This standard identifies EHSRs (Essential Health & Safety Requirements) and safeguarding which will allow compliance with the Supply of Machinery Regulations 2008.

The BS EN16005 standard alone is not law, but it is the requirement for any automatic door to be legally compliant with the Machine Directive and The Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998, which are legal regulations.

BS EN16005 is not applicable to doors in use before 10/4/13 unless:

The system is upgraded via a significant change
There has been an incident which would suggest the system is dangerous

In both cases, we generate a new risk assessment.

It is not sufficient to just comply with EN16005, the system also needs to be SAFE. The owner of the system has a responsibility to demonstrate that it is as good as (if not better) than the standard; maintenance and safety checks will support this.

• We are responsible to ensure the machine meets the EHSRs.

Section 3 of the H&S at Work Act 1974 requires employers, who as part of their work, ensure that systems in their care are safe.

We do not place a system identified as unsafe, back into use.
We advise our client if the door does not comply with the latest standard and provide free quotations to upgrade.
It is the client’s decision as to whether or not a door system is upgraded.
